Using social media for external engagement

Bertie Bosrédon

Bertie is a Digital Engagement & Social Media expert with over 15 years experience in digital communications (and an indelible French accent). He set up British Heart Foundation’s first online team before joining Breast Cancer Care to develop a busy online community, innovative online tools, and an influential social media strategy.

Bertie talked about his work at Breast Cancer Care, developing and implementing a user centred social media strategy involving all staff at all levels. He shared practical tips and concrete examples to demonstrate how to raise awareness of your organisation, and increase user and staff engagement using social media tools.

Using social media to support research

Noeleen Schenk

Noeleen is a management consultant, specialising in all aspects of information and knowledge management strategy and implementation.

Her experience as both a researcher and practitioner brings a practical dimension to the projects she undertakes, enabling her to combine a strategic approach with experience in the field.

Noeleen is passionate about ensuring all the solutions she develops with her clients are evidence-based. Her current interest is in the challenges and opportunities for research provided by social media.

This workshop session focused on how you can use social media tools to support research, either our own, or that of our colleagues.

We learnt about the role of social media in research and how to:

  • Review the range of social media services available to support research
  • Identify a framework to assess the applicability of different social media tools
  • Consider the factors involved in selecting the appropriate tools
  • Apply your knowledge of social media to the research cycle

Noeleen developed the session materials with her colleague David Haynes. Their considerable practical experience as researchers and consultants enables them to ‘tell it like it really is’.

Social media technology

James Mullan

James Mullan is KM Systems Manager at Field Fisher Waterhouse where he is responsible for managing the firm's Intranet and award-winning Enterprise Search tool. A long-term blogger and Twitter-enthusiast, James describes himself as a Social Media lover and tinkerer, always trying out new tools for blogs, wikis, and social networking.

The newest and the best social media tools featured in James’ talk, and he also gave advise on how to successfully implement technology solutions in your organisation.

James has over 16 years experience in Information Management, with particular expertise in using technology within the legal information sector. James is currently President of the British & Irish Association of Law Librarians.

Panel discussion: building global teams

Virginia Henry, Hank Malik and Richard Hare

Many people work in geographically dispersed organisations, and an increasing number of us are ‘mobile’ or home workers. Effective global and more agile team-working, with supporting tools and methods, is becoming increasingly important. But how do we dismantle the barriers of culture, geography, apathy, competitive wariness and constant IT fads to offer really useful and workable solutions that make real business sense and improve work effectiveness and personal performance?

Hank Malik and Richard Hare both have practical experience of creating the right environments for building and sustaining successful virtual teams on a global basis. Together with Virginia Henry, chair of the discussion, they shared their experiences of the opportunities and challenges of using social media tools. Our expert panel discussed their business and strategic approaches, the people change impact required, and the sheer willpower needed to build successful global teams.

 

Virginia Henry

Virginia is Knowledge and Learning Manager at UnLtd working to help a UK-wide team to share knowledge and learning, and to strengthen collaboration with each other and with partners.

Following a successful career in broadcasting, Virginia moved into Knowledge Management over ten years ago. She has since been instrumental in implementing KM strategies across global teams in DaimlerChysler, De Beers, Procter & Gamble and Balfour Beatty.

Richard Hare

Richard's expertise lies in Intranet and Knowledge Management strategy and design. He created one of the first internal social networks inside a large, global corporate organisation, helped establish internal blogging and popularised a failing on-line community system which had previously been ignored.

For ten years he worked as part of a team which turned round a failing intranet by applying Knowledge Management principles, design thinking and prioritising usability, almost doubling the number of monthly users within two years.

Hank Malik

Hank is recognised as a Knowledge Management and Collaboration consultant, experienced in both delivering and managing global solutions with a blend of technology, content, process and transformation capabilities, frequently working at Executive levels.

Hank has wide experience with Enterprise Portals, Social Media and Change management with successful delivery in both the UK private and public sectors alongside international assignments including North America and Japan.

Formerly Head of KM at the Carbon Trust, Hank has worked for several major management consultancies. He speaks regularly at KM conferences, and holds a Master Certified Knowledge Manager (MCKM) accreditation.

Andrew Solomon and Simon Halberstam

Andrew specialises in advising companies and entrepreneurs on corporate transactions and commercial matters, often dealing with companies in the technology sector.

Simon is Partner and Head of Technology and Social Media Law at Kingsley Napley LLP. Before joining the firm in 2010, he previously worked at Sprecher Grier Halberstam LLP and Slaughter and May.

The future of the business of social media

Stephen Dale

Stephen is a passionate community and collaboration ecologist, creating off-line and on-line environments that foster conversations and engagement. Stephen’s considerable experience as an information and knowledge management professional has enabled him to blend technology solutions with an in-depth understanding of behavioural characteristics that encourage people to self-organise, collaborate and co-create.

He is both an evangelist and practitioner in the use of Social Networking technologies and Social Media applications to support personal learning and knowledge sharing.

He was the business lead and information architect for the local government community of practice platform, the largest and most advanced online practitioner group in the UK public sector.

He was the lead consultant and product architect for the Local Government Group’s Knowledge Hub, an innovative Enterprise Social Software solution that utilises semantic technology to support more effective online learning and sharing. Knowledge Hub was implemented using open source software on an open platform to enable local authorities and their partners to develop their own value added solutions to support local services.

Stephen is currently Chairman of the Online Information Executive Committee.
